A tired lawn is one of the things people most often assume has to be dug up and started again. Sometimes it does. Quite often what it actually needs is considerably cheaper, and it is worth establishing which before anybody strips anything.

When a Lawn Can Be Rescued
If the grass is thin rather than gone, and the underlying ground is reasonable, renovation usually works and costs a fraction of replacement:
- Thin and patchy — scarify, aerate, topdress and overseed
- Mossy — moss is a symptom of shade, wet or compaction. Deal with the cause and the moss goes
- Compacted and hard — aeration, which is dramatically underrated and transforms a tired lawn
- Weedy but otherwise sound — treatment and overseeding
- A few bare patches — repair them individually rather than replacing the whole area
When Replacement Is the Right Answer
- The grass is largely gone, not merely thin
- The levels are wrong — bumps, hollows and dips that make it unusable or unmowable
- There is almost no topsoil, or the ground is builders' rubble under a skim
- It has been comprehensively taken over by coarse grasses or weeds
- The area is being relandscaped anyway
- It is being handed over for a sale or a letting and has to look right now
What Replacement Involves
Stripping the old lawn off and taking it away, full cultivation, weed root removal, topsoil where it is needed, levelling, firming and new turf. It is the same process as a new lawn, with the additional stripping at the start.
The stripping matters: an old lawn rotovated in rather than removed leaves a layer of decaying thatch that settles unevenly, and the new lawn goes down with it.
What Our Lawn Replacement Service Covers
- Honest assessment of whether replacement is actually needed
- Old lawn stripped and removed from site
- Full cultivation and perennial weed root removal
- Levels corrected properly rather than skimmed over
- Topsoil imported where depth or quality requires it
- New turf supplied, delivered and laid
- Renovation instead — scarifying, aerating, overseeding — where that is the better buy
- Written aftercare for the first six weeks
Fix the Cause, Not the Symptom
A new lawn laid on the ground that killed the old one will go the same way. If the area is heavily shaded, waterlogged in winter, or sitting on compacted subsoil, replacing the turf changes nothing. Those get dealt with first, or the honest advice is that the area should be something other than lawn.
Shade is the commonest of the three, and it is the one nobody wants to hear. An area that gets sun for a couple of hours a day will not hold a decent lawn however good the turf is. Thinning the crown above it sometimes solves it; where it does not, planting is a better answer than turfing the same patch every three years.
Timing
Autumn is the best season for either route — warm soil, reliable rain, and months before any heat. Spring is a good second. Renovation in particular is very much an autumn job, because overseeding needs warm soil and moisture to take.

Lawn Replacement — Common Questions
Does my lawn definitely need replacing?
Often not. If the grass is thin rather than gone and the ground is reasonable, scarifying, aerating and overseeding costs a fraction and usually works.
What is scarifying?
Raking out the dead thatch that builds up between the grass and the soil. Combined with aeration and overseeding it revives most tired lawns.
My lawn is mostly moss. Can it be saved?
Usually, but the moss is a symptom of shade, wet or compaction. Treat the moss alone and it comes straight back.
Can you fix a bumpy lawn without replacing it?
Minor unevenness, yes, by topdressing over several seasons. Genuinely wrong levels need stripping and regrading.
When is the best time?
Autumn for both replacement and renovation. Spring is a good second.
