What Ivy Does — and What It Gets Blamed For

Ivy attracts more confident misinformation than any other plant in a British garden. It is worth separating what it genuinely does from what gets assumed.

Ivy on a tree

Ivy is not a parasite. It roots in the ground and takes nothing from the tree it climbs. What it does do is add considerable weight and a large sail area to a crown — which matters in a gale — shade out the tree's own foliage as it reaches the canopy, and hide the trunk from inspection, so defects and decay go unnoticed.

On a young or already struggling tree, heavy ivy is worth removing. On a large healthy tree it is often left, or severed at the base and left to die back in place.

Ivy on a wall

On sound masonry in good repair, ivy is largely cosmetic — it climbs by adhesive rootlets rather than boring in. On poor or soft mortar, older lime-mortared brickwork, or anywhere there are already cracks, it gets into the joints and opens them further. It also holds moisture against the wall and gets under render, cladding, fascias and roof edges, which is where the real damage usually is.

Ivy on fences and outbuildings

Straightforwardly destructive, because the weight and the moisture are acting on something much lighter than a house. An ivy-covered fence panel is usually holding the ivy up rather than the other way round, which becomes apparent the moment it is cleared.

How It Is Removed

  1. Sever at the base. The stems are cut through low down and a section removed, so the top growth is disconnected from the roots
  2. Let it die back, where that suits. On a tree or a large wall, ivy that has been severed dries out over several weeks and comes away far more easily — and with far less damage to what is underneath — than live growth pulled off green
  3. Clear the growth. Removing the dead material, working down rather than tearing upwards
  4. Deal with the roots. Grubbing out the root crown where it can be reached, because a cut stem left in the ground will regrow

Pulling live ivy off a wall is how render, mortar and paint come off with it. Severing first and clearing once it has died back takes longer in calendar time and does considerably less harm.

Timing and Wildlife

Ivy is one of the most valuable plants in a garden for wildlife: it flowers very late in the year when almost nothing else does, fruits in late winter, and provides dense cover the rest of the time. It is also a favoured nesting site.

Established ivy frequently holds nests, and nesting birds are protected. Ivy on a mature tree or an old wall is also a known bat roosting feature, and all UK bat species and their roosts are protected. Where either is suspected, the work stops and proper advice is taken.

In practice that means heavy ivy clearance is best done outside the main nesting season, and any growth is checked before it is cut.

After the Ivy Is Off

What is underneath is usually the real finding. Mortar that needs repointing, a fascia that has rotted, a fence that was being held up, render that has blown, or a tree with a defect nobody could see. None of that is caused by the removal; it is what the ivy was covering, and it is better known about than not.
