Ivy removal covers an unusually wide range, from an hour clearing a fence line to a two-visit job on a three-storey wall. What separates them is not the area covered, which is what people tend to describe.
Height, First
- Ground level to head height — quick, hand work, no access equipment. The cheapest ivy work there is
- Up to single-storey eaves — ladder work. Slower, because the work is done from a ladder rather than standing at it
- Two storeys and above — proper access equipment, or climbing, and the cost base changes accordingly
- Into a tree crown — a climbing job, priced as tree work rather than as ivy work
Height is also the thing people most often underestimate from the ground, which is why a photograph taken from a distance is more useful than a close-up of the stems.
What It Is Growing On
This changes the method, and therefore the time:
- A fence or a shed — fastest. Nothing underneath needs protecting, and speed is fine
- Sound modern brick — straightforward
- Old lime mortar, soft brick, stone — the slowest. Careful work, full die-back needed first, and repointing likely afterwards
- Render, cladding or painted walls — slow, and making good should be expected
- A mature tree — priced by the climbing, not the ivy

Volume, Which Surprises People
Established ivy off a house wall or a long boundary produces a startling quantity of material — several times what the same area of hedge clippings would fill, because ivy is dense and wet and does not compress. On a large job the removal of the material is a real part of the price rather than an afterthought.
The Two-Visit Question
Severing, waiting and clearing is two visits, and it is usually the cheaper option overall. Dead ivy is lighter, comes away in sheets, and takes far less time to clear than live growth — enough to more than offset the second visit on most jobs. It also does far less damage to what is underneath. Where a single visit is wanted, it is possible, and it costs more rather than less.
What Reduces It
- Combining it with other work. Ivy on a tree trunk comes off while somebody is up there for other reasons, which is much cheaper than a separate climb
- Doing it as part of a clearance, where the team and the removal are already arranged
- Being clear about what is actually wanted. Taking ivy off the building and the fence and leaving it on the back wall is materially cheaper than clearing everything
- Not waiting. Ivy is one of the things that gets meaningfully more expensive each year, because it gets higher
What Might Be Extra
Repointing, render repair and fence replacement are separate trades and separate costs. We will flag what we can see is likely before starting, but some of it is only visible once the ivy is off — which is a reason to expect it rather than a reason to be surprised by it.

Ask Us About Your Own Garden
Photograph the ivy from far enough back to show how high it goes. Height is the first thing that changes the price and the hardest to judge from a close-up.
