What a Garden Clearance Covers
Clearance is the broadest of our services, which makes it the one most worth defining. It is the job of taking a garden that has got away from its owner and putting it back to a usable, maintainable state — not landscaping it, and not maintaining it afterwards.
- Cutting down and removing overgrown vegetation, brambles and scrub
- Cutting back or removing self-seeded saplings
- Clearing ivy, bamboo and other established growth as part of the work
- Strimming and cutting back rough grass
- Removing green waste from site
- Clearing the ground ready for turfing, planting or landscaping

The Gardens This Usually Applies To
- A recently bought house where the garden was not the priority during the sale and has had a season or two to get going
- A rental property between tenancies, where a garden needs bringing back to a lettable state quickly
- A probate or long-empty property, often several years of growth rather than one
- A garden that has outgrown its owner — frequently the reason, and there is nothing unusual about it
- Ground being cleared before building work, an extension, a new fence or a driveway
How a Clearance Gets Quoted
Clearance is priced on volume and access more than on area, which is why photographs matter so much more here than on any other job. Two gardens of identical size can be a day apart depending on what is in them and how it gets out.
The things that move the price:
- How much is coming out, by volume rather than footprint
- Access. Whether waste can be barrowed to a vehicle, carried through a house, or has to go over a fence
- Where the vehicle can park, and how far it is from the garden
- What is hidden in it. Old fencing, concrete, rubble, sheds, furniture and general rubbish are common and are not green waste
- How finished you want it — cut down and cleared, or ground ready to turf
Send photographs, including the route out. A picture of the garden and a picture of the side passage or the parking will get you a far more accurate quotation than any description, and it avoids the price changing on the day.

Where the Waste Goes
This is worth understanding, because the responsibility does not simply end when somebody drives away with it.
Household waste is subject to a duty of care. Anyone removing waste from a property as a business must be a registered waste carrier, and the person whose waste it is has an obligation to take reasonable steps to check that whoever takes it away is entitled to. Fly-tipped waste traced back to a household can land the householder with the consequences, even though somebody else dumped it.
The registration is a public one and can be checked on the Environment Agency's register. It is a reasonable thing to ask any contractor for, and it takes a minute to confirm.
Clearance Is Usually the First Step
Most clearances lead into something: tree work that could not be reached until the undergrowth came out, a stump that turned out to be under the brambles, a fence that needs replacing now it is visible, or new turf going down on ground that has just been cleared. It is worth talking about the whole sequence at the quoting stage, because doing it in one visit is nearly always cheaper than doing it in three.
