Most people expect this to be about how big the garden is. It is much more about how the material gets out.
Typical Timescales
- A small overgrown back garden, good access — half a day to a day
- A typical neglected domestic garden — one day
- The same garden reached through the house or a narrow alley — two days, most of the extra being the carry
- A large plot, or one with heavy woody growth — two to three days
- A garden with tree work in it as well — add a day, and it is usually done first
- Clearing to cultivated ground ready for turf — add half a day to a day over clearing alone

What Actually Slows It Down
- The carry. Every barrow load is a round trip. Thirty metres through a house instead of five metres to a drive can genuinely double the job
- Tip runs. A vehicle that fills and has to leave, unload and come back is dead time. Chipping on site, where a chipper can get in, cuts the number of runs sharply
- Working around things being kept. Clearing everything is fast; clearing selectively is slow, because every cut is a decision
- What is buried in it. Rubble, wire, old fencing and household waste in long grass all stop the work while it is dealt with
- Wet ground. Soft ground you cannot barrow across changes the method to carrying by hand
What Does Not Slow It Down As Much As Expected
- How overgrown it looks. Cutting is quick. Ten years of growth is not ten times the work of one year — it is more material, but it is the same operation
- Brambles. Unpleasant, not slow
- The size of the plot, where access is good and a vehicle is close
Getting It Done in One Day
Where the timescale matters — a sale, a tenancy, a landscaper booked — a few things genuinely help:
- Keep a parking space free, and say so the night before if the street is difficult
- Unlock gates and clear the route out
- Agree what is staying beforehand rather than on the day
- Move anything fragile or valuable out of the garden
- Say in advance if there is likely to be rubble or household waste, so the right vehicle comes
One thing worth planning around: nesting season, roughly March to August. An overgrown garden is prime nesting habitat, and where an active nest is found that section waits. On a heavily overgrown plot in May, that can mean the clearance happens in two stages rather than one — which is much better known in advance than discovered on the day.
