A garden left for a season is a tidy-up. A garden left for ten years is a different proposition — brambles over head height, self-seeded trees where the border was, and no way of telling where the boundaries are.
This is routine work and it is far quicker than it looks from the outside. What takes the planning is deciding what is underneath it all.

The First Stage Is Just Seeing It
Before deciding anything permanent, the garden gets cut back to the point where you can walk round it and see the ground and the fence lines. Rough grass down, brambles and scrub cut to stumps, a path cleared round the boundary.
That alone transforms how big the garden looks and how possible it feels, and it is the cheapest part of the whole thing. Nothing permanent is removed at that point.
Then Decide, With the Ground Visible
If you have just moved in, give the garden a year before removing anything established, if you possibly can. A neglected garden will contain bulbs, perennials, fruit trees and shrubs that are invisible for most of the year. People routinely clear out a mature magnolia in February or a productive old apple in November. A year of watching costs nothing and cannot be undone the other way.

What Gets Found
Neglected gardens contain things nobody knew about, and it is normal rather than exceptional: buried rubble and hardcore, a path or patio under the growth, fence panels rotted out, dumped items, stumps from trees felled years ago, and occasionally a well, a soakaway or a filled-in pond.
Some of it changes the price, which is why a quotation from photographs of long grass carries an honest caveat about what is underneath.
Wildlife, Which Is Not a Formality Here
An overgrown garden is habitat, and clearing one is not a neutral act. Nesting birds are protected from roughly March to August, and on a heavily overgrown plot in May that can genuinely mean staging the work in two parts rather than one. Hedgehogs and other animals shelter in exactly the piles a clearance removes. Growth is checked before it is cut.
It is also worth leaving something. A log pile or a brash heap in a corner costs nothing, keeps some of what was living there, and is one of the more valuable things in any garden.
How Long
Most overgrown domestic gardens are a day. Two where the access is poor or the growth is woody — and it is the access that usually decides it, because every barrow load is a round trip. How overgrown it looks matters far less than people expect.

Overgrown Garden Clearance — Common Questions
My garden hasn't been touched in ten years. Is that a problem?
Not really. Cutting is quick — ten years is more material than one, not ten times the work. Access matters far more.
Will you know what to keep?
We would rather you told us. Walk it beforehand and mark anything that stays, because in an overgrown garden that judgement should be yours.
Can you clear it in the nesting season?
Carefully, with the growth checked first, and sometimes in two stages. On a heavily overgrown plot in spring, waiting until autumn is often the sensible answer.
Do you take everything away?
Yes, under a registered waste carrier. Household and building waste is priced separately because it goes to a different stream.
Can you clear it ready for a new lawn?
Yes, but say so — that is clearing to cultivated ground, which is a further stage than clearing to soil.
