Ivy removal is one of the jobs where the elapsed time and the time on site are very different numbers, and quoting only one of them gives a misleading picture.
Time on Site
- A fence line or a shed — two to four hours, single visit. No die-back period needed because nothing underneath is at risk
- Ground ivy across a border or a bank — half a day to a day depending on the area, single visit
- Ivy out of a tree — often under an hour to sever, and the crown clears itself over the following months. Longer if the dead material is being taken out rather than left to fall
- A single-storey house wall — an hour to sever, then half a day to clear on the return visit
- A two-storey wall or a long high boundary — a day or more on the clearing visit, plus access equipment
Why Two Visits
Severing takes minutes. What takes the time is getting the ivy off whatever it is attached to, and dead ivy comes off perhaps three times faster than live ivy — in sheets rather than in handfuls, with the rootlets having released their grip.
So waiting is not a delay, it is a labour-saving step. It also does considerably less damage to mortar, render and paint, which is the more important half of the argument.

How Long the Gap Needs to Be
- Four weeks — the minimum worth bothering with. Some die-back, some benefit
- Eight to twelve weeks — the useful range. Foliage brown and dry, rootlets releasing, material much lighter
- A full winter — ideal on old or delicate brickwork, where the priority is doing no damage rather than finishing quickly
Warm weather speeds it up; a cold still winter slows it down, so a September severing is further along by November than a January one is by March.
What Makes a Job Take Longer
- Height. Everything above ladder height is slower, because the work happens from access equipment rather than from the ground
- Delicate substrate. Old lime mortar is careful, patient work and cannot be hurried without doing exactly the damage the job is meant to prevent
- Volume and where it goes. A large wall produces a great deal of material, and carrying it through a house adds real time
- Root crowns in awkward places — under paving, behind a wall, in a fence line
- What is found underneath, which occasionally stops the work while a decision gets made
The Honest Total
For a typical house wall with established ivy: an hour in week one, half a day in week ten, and it is finished. The elapsed time looks long and the actual work is not. Where somebody needs it gone by a fixed date — a sale, a letting, scaffolding going up — that is worth saying at the enquiry so the severing can be brought forward.
