Ivy Removal

Ivy Removal From Walls & Buildings in Hertfordshire

Severed first, cleared once it has died back. Pulling live ivy off a wall is how mortar, render and paint come off with it.

Ivy on a house is where the real damage happens, and it is also where doing the job badly costs more than leaving it alone would have.

The work is deliberately done in two stages several weeks apart, and understanding why is most of what is worth knowing before booking it.

Where Ivy Actually Damages a Building

  • The roof edge — under the fascia, behind the gutter, under the bottom tiles. Most of the expensive damage blamed on ivy on walls happened here
  • Soft or failing mortar — rootlets get into open joints and widen them. Old lime-mortared brickwork especially
  • Render and cladding — ivy gets behind it and lifts it
  • Windows, doors, vents and airbricks — grows in, thickens, and blocks
  • Anything holding moisture against a surface that needs to dry

On sound, well-pointed modern brickwork, ivy is largely cosmetic — it climbs by adhesive rootlets rather than boring in. That is worth saying, because it means the urgent part of most jobs is the roofline rather than the wall.

Why It Is Two Visits

Pulling live ivy off a wall takes the surface with it. The rootlets grip hard, and a live stem hauled downward brings away mortar, render, paint and sometimes the face of the brick. Severing at the base and letting it die back first does far less damage — and less work, because dead ivy comes away in sheets rather than handfuls.

Visit one is short: the stems are cut through low down and a section removed so nothing can bridge the cut. Visit two, several weeks later, is the clearing. The waiting is not a delay, it is the method.

How Long the Gap Should Be

  • Four weeks — the minimum worth bothering with
  • Eight to twelve weeks — the useful range. Foliage brown and dry, rootlets releasing
  • A full winter — best on old or delicate brickwork, where doing no damage matters more than finishing quickly

What Our Wall Ivy Service Covers

  • Severing at the base, with a section of stem removed
  • Clearing once dead, working downward rather than tearing upward
  • Roof edges, fascias, gutters and eaves — the priority
  • Careful removal from old lime-mortared and soft brickwork
  • Rootlet residue brushed off once dry
  • Root crowns grubbed out where they can be reached
  • Nesting and bat checks before any work starts
  • All material removed

What You Will Find Underneath

Almost always something, and almost none of it caused by the removal: mortar that needs repointing, render that has blown, a rotted fascia, blocked airbricks, paintwork that has gone. We point these out as they appear rather than at the end.

One piece of advice that matters: do not paint or render a wall that has just had ivy taken off it. It is far wetter than it looks, and sealing that moisture in does more damage than the ivy was doing. Give it a full drying season.

Stopping It Coming Back

Ivy climbs from the ground. A clear strip of 20 or 30 centimetres along the base of the wall, checked once or twice a year with anything climbing cut through, prevents the whole situation. It is the single most effective thing anybody does about ivy.

Ivy Removal From Walls — Common Questions

Can you take ivy off in one visit?

Yes, and it does more damage to the wall and takes longer. Severing and clearing several weeks later is both gentler and less work.

Will the wall be damaged?

Some rootlet residue and staining is normal and weathers off. Where mortar was already soft, repointing is likely — the ivy exploited it rather than created it.

Is ivy really damaging my house?

At the roof edge, usually yes. On sound modern brickwork, usually not. Send a photograph of where it meets the roofline.

How high can you work?

Two storeys and above with proper access equipment. Send a photograph from far enough back to show the full height.

Can you repoint afterwards?

That is a separate trade. We will tell you what we can see is likely so you can line somebody up.
