Ivy Removal

Ivy Removal From Trees in Hertfordshire

Severed at the base, not hauled out of the crown. And an honest answer first about whether it needs doing at all.

Ivy on a tree is the one case where the usual advice — always take it off — is wrong often enough to be worth correcting.

Ivy is not a parasite. It has its own roots in the ground, makes its own food, and takes nothing from the tree. It does not twine or strangle, and it did not kill a dead tree it happens to be growing on — it thrives there because the thinning crown let the light in.

What Ivy Genuinely Does to a Tree

  • Competes, once it is in the crown. On the trunk it shades nothing. Spread through the branches it is shading the tree's own foliage
  • Adds wind loading — the most substantial effect. An evergreen mass in a crown that would otherwise be bare in winter is a large sail exactly when the gales arrive
  • Adds weight, particularly on individual limbs and particularly when wet
  • Hides everything — cavities, fungal brackets, cracks, the root flare. A tree that cannot be inspected cannot be called sound

When We Would Take It Off

  • It has reached the crown and is spreading through the branches
  • The tree is in a wind-exposed position
  • The tree is declining and the ivy is now competing
  • The trunk needs inspecting for a survey, a sale or a real concern
  • The tree is close to a building, where loading matters more
  • It is a young tree, which ivy will genuinely outcompete

When We Would Leave It

A large, vigorous, healthy mature tree with ivy confined to the trunk, in a sheltered position, with no structural concerns. Or a standing dead tree being kept deliberately as habitat, where ivy does nothing but good.

Ivy flowers in late autumn when almost nothing else does, fruits in late winter when food is scarce, and provides dense cover all year. It is one of the more valuable things in a garden and it is worth keeping where it is not doing harm.

How It Is Done

Not pulled. The stems are severed at the base and a section removed, and the ivy in the crown then dies, browns and drops out over the following months. That does far less damage to the bark than hauling live growth down, and it is a much shorter job.

Clearing the dead material out of the crown afterwards is optional. On a garden tree people usually want it tidied; in a wilder corner, letting it fall in its own time costs nothing.

The Check That Comes First

Established ivy on a mature tree is a known bat roosting feature. All bat species and their roosts are protected whether or not a bat is present at the time. It is also heavily used for nesting. The growth is checked before anything is cut, and where either is suspected the work stops and proper advice is taken.

What Our Tree Ivy Service Covers

  • Severing at the base with a section of stem removed
  • Root crowns grubbed out where they can be reached
  • Dead material cleared from the crown, where you want it tidied
  • Combined with other tree work, which is much cheaper than a separate climb
  • Trunk inspection once the ivy is off
  • Honest advice on whether it needs doing at all

That last point is worth the emphasis: the cheapest version of this job is very often being told your tree is fine as it is.

Ivy Removal From Trees — Common Questions

Is ivy killing my tree?

Almost certainly not. Ivy is not a parasite and does not strangle. If the tree is declining, the ivy is usually a symptom rather than a cause.

Should I take ivy off a healthy tree?

Only if it has reached the crown, the tree is wind-exposed, or the trunk needs inspecting. On the trunk of a vigorous tree it does little harm.

How is it removed?

Severed at the base, then left. The ivy in the crown dies and drops out over the following months, which is far gentler than pulling it.

Can you do it while you're doing other tree work?

Yes, and that is much the cheapest way — somebody is already up there.

What about bats and nesting birds?

Checked before anything is cut. Bat roosts are protected whether or not a bat is present, and work stops where one is suspected.
