Ivy Removal From Fences & Sheds in Hertfordshire

The one case where ivy is straightforwardly destructive, and the one that is usually a single visit rather than two.

Ivy on a house divides opinion. Ivy on a fence does not. A fence panel is light, it is timber, and under a mat of ivy it cannot dry out — all three work against it.

It is also the version of this job that needs no die-back period, because nothing underneath needs protecting. Most fence and shed clearances are done in one visit.

What It Does to Timber

  • Weight — established wet ivy is heavy, and it loads one face of a panel that was never designed for it. This is why ivy-covered fences lean before they fail
  • Wind — a bare fence lets wind through; an ivy-covered one is a solid sail. Extra weight plus a much larger wind load takes whole runs over in a gale
  • Moisture — timber needs to dry between wettings. Under ivy it never does, the preservative breaks down and rot starts at the post bases, where nobody is looking
  • Getting in — into the gaps between boards, behind arris rails, into the joint where a panel meets a concrete post, then thickening

Sheds and Outbuildings

Same problems, with the roof edge added. Ivy gets under felt roofing and lifts it, which lets water in and is usually the first real damage, and it grows into window frames and around doors. On a shed the roof edge is the priority and the walls can wait.

What You Should Expect to Find

On an old fence, the ivy is frequently holding it up rather than pulling it down. Clearing a long run that has been covered for a decade commonly reveals rotten post bases, broken arris rails and panels that were being held in place by the growth. This is not caused by the removal — it is what the ivy was concealing.

Which is worth raising at the quotation, because where a fence is clearly going to need replacing, clearing the ivy off it carefully is wasted money. Better to take the ivy and the fence out together and start again.

What Our Fence and Shed Ivy Service Covers

  • Ivy cleared from fence runs, panels, posts and rails
  • Sheds, summerhouses, garages and outbuildings
  • Roof edges, felt edges and guttering cleared first
  • Pergolas, trellis, arches and greenhouse frames
  • Root crowns grubbed out along the line
  • Honest assessment of the condition of what is underneath
  • Ivy and any failed fencing removed together where that is the sensible answer
  • All material removed

Boundary Ivy

Ivy on a shared fence very often has its roots on the other side of it, which changes what can be done. Severing at the boundary and clearing your side does stop the damage, and it will need repeating unless the root crown on the other side is dealt with. It is worth a word with the neighbour, and we are happy to quote a run from both sides as one job.

Keeping It Off

A clear strip along the base of the fence, and anything starting to climb cut through once a year, prevents the entire situation for a few minutes' work. Considerably easier than the alternative.

Ivy Removal From Fences — Common Questions

Is this a one-visit job?

Usually yes. The die-back period is for protecting masonry — on a fence there is nothing underneath that needs it.

Will my fence survive having the ivy taken off?

Sometimes it will not, and that is worth knowing beforehand. A fence covered for a decade is often being held up by the growth.

Can you remove the fence at the same time?

Yes, and where the fence is finished that is the sensible answer rather than clearing ivy off something being replaced.

What if the ivy is rooted in next door's garden?

We can sever at the boundary and clear your side, which stops the damage. It will regrow unless the crown on their side is dealt with.

Do you clear ivy off sheds and summerhouses?

Yes, and the roof edge is the priority — ivy under felt roofing is where the water gets in.
