Tree Masters Hertfordshire bamboo removal - an operative cutting through a dense bamboo clump
Bamboo Removal advice

Why Cutting Bamboo at Ground Level Is Often Not Enough

Because you have removed this year's growth from a plant that lives underground. It is the equivalent of mowing a lawn and expecting the grass to be gone.

This is the single most common thing done about bamboo, and it is the single most common reason bamboo gets worse.

What Cutting Actually Removes

Canes are the visible part of the plant, not the plant. Cutting them removes one season's above-ground growth from a rhizome network that may be occupying twenty square metres of soil and holding a substantial energy reserve.

The network is untouched. Nothing about the cut reaches it, and nothing about it slows the spread, which happens underground and continues regardless of what is happening above.

Why Repeated Cutting Makes It Worse

Bamboo is a grass, and grasses evolved alongside grazing animals. Losing top growth is a condition they are built for, and the response is to produce more — and, in a running bamboo, to extend outward in search of ground that is not being grazed.

So the pattern on a clump that has been cut back annually for years is a plant that is denser at the centre, wider than it was, and carrying more rhizome than before it was ever touched. The visible situation is under control every summer and the actual situation deteriorates every year.

The Exception That Genuinely Works

Cutting every time, all season, for several years, does eventually exhaust it. Not an annual cut — every shoot removed as it appears, across the whole area, for two to four growing seasons. Each shoot is a withdrawal from the rhizome's reserves that is never repaid, and eventually the account empties.

This is why bamboo in the middle of a regularly mown lawn tends to give up on its own, and it is a real strategy where the whole spread happens to be mowable. It is not a strategy for bamboo in a border, against a fence, or through a patio, because you cannot get at every shoot every time.

What Cutting Is Genuinely For

  • Clearing the way before excavation. The canes have to come down before anybody can dig, and that is part of a removal
  • Thinning a clumping bamboo you are keeping — taking out the oldest canes annually keeps it looking well
  • Holding the situation while a proper job is arranged
  • Harvesting canes, which are genuinely useful in the garden

The Two Variants Worth Naming

Cutting and covering

Cutting down and laying membrane or sheeting over the area does more than cutting alone, because it denies light to whatever comes up. It needs to stay down for two or three years to be decisive, and it needs to cover the whole spread — rhizome simply travels beyond the edge of the sheet and comes up past it.

Cutting and treating

Cutting down and treating the regrowth once it has leafed up puts chemical into the plant rather than onto bare canes, which is the right way round. It still takes repeated applications over two or three seasons, and it is slower and less certain than digging.

The Short Version

If the aim is a tidier bamboo, cut it. If the aim is no bamboo, the rhizomes have to come out of the ground, and every year spent cutting instead is a year in which the area needing excavation gets larger.
