A rhizome barrier is the answer in two situations: where you want to keep bamboo but stop it travelling, and where bamboo is arriving from a neighbouring garden and removal on your side alone would need repeating for ever.
It is not a substitute for excavation, and installed in the wrong order it makes things worse rather than better.

What a Proper Barrier Is
Not landscape fabric, and not a strip of damp-proof membrane. A purpose-made heavy-gauge vertical barrier, installed to sufficient depth, with:
- The top edge left proud of the soil by several centimetres, so rhizome trying to go over the top can be seen and cut
- Joints overlapped and sealed, never butted — a gap at a joint is a doorway
- The base angled outward where possible, so rhizome meeting it is deflected upward rather than down
- A clear inspection strip along the outside, because a barrier nobody looks at is one that fails quietly
The Order Matters More Than the Barrier
Excavate the line first, then install. Putting a barrier into ground that already has rhizome on both sides divides one problem into two, and the half on the far side is now the half you cannot reach. This is the single commonest way barrier installations fail.
So a barrier job is normally an excavation job with a barrier at the end of it, and it is priced that way.
When a Barrier Is the Right Answer
- Bamboo arriving from a neighbouring garden, where you cannot excavate the source
- Bamboo you want to keep, contained to a defined area
- Rhizome that has gone under a structure that is staying
- Protecting a new lawn, patio or border from an adjacent clump
- Planting a running bamboo deliberately, with the barrier in from the start
What a Barrier Will Not Do
It will not fix an established spread on its own. It will not kill what is already inside it. And it is not maintenance-free — the reason the top edge is left proud is that rhizome will try to go over it, and somebody has to look.
A barrier installed around a clump that has already travelled simply fences in part of the problem.
What Our Barrier Service Covers
- The line excavated clear of rhizome before installation
- Heavy-gauge purpose-made barrier to appropriate depth
- Overlapped and sealed joints
- Top edge left proud for inspection
- Boundary runs, and containment around a retained clump
- Advice on what the barrier can and cannot achieve, before the work
- All excavated rhizome removed from site
The Neighbour Conversation
Where bamboo is crossing a boundary, dealing with it from both sides at once is cheaper for both parties than each side excavating up to a line separately — and unlike one-sided work, it actually resolves it. We are happy to quote a boundary as a single job where both households agree.
Bamboo is not covered by the specific legal regime that applies to Japanese knotweed; it is an ordinary garden plant in law. That said, spreading growth crossing a boundary has been treated as a nuisance in principle, so it is much better raised early than left.

Bamboo Root Barriers — Common Questions
Will a barrier stop bamboo on its own?
Only if the line is excavated clear first. A barrier dropped into ground that already has rhizome on both sides just divides the problem.
How deep does a barrier go?
Deep enough to get below the rhizome zone, with the top left proud of the soil so anything going over can be seen.
Can I use landscape fabric or damp-proof membrane?
No. Rhizome goes through both. It needs a purpose-made heavy-gauge barrier with sealed joints.
Can you put a barrier on the boundary if the bamboo is next door's?
Yes, and on your side of the line. It is worth telling your neighbour first — these are much better resolved together.
Does a barrier need maintaining?
It needs looking at. Rhizome will try to go over the top edge, which is exactly why the edge is left visible.
