This is the job people mean when they say bamboo removal, and it is worth naming separately because a great deal of what is sold as bamboo removal is cane cutting with a tidy-up.
Cutting canes removes one season's growth from a plant that lives underground and is unaffected by anything happening above it. The removal is the excavation.

What the Job Is
- The spread is walked out first, following the newest canes to the current edge and allowing for live rhizome beyond them. This happens before a price, not after
- The canes are cut and cleared — bulky, and the easy part
- The rhizome mass is excavated, typically the top 30 to 50 centimetres across the whole affected area rather than under the clump
- Individual runners are chased out rather than cut off at the edge of the dig
- The spoil is checked, because fragments are the entire problem
- Everything leaves site. No rhizome is composted, chipped or moved elsewhere in the garden
Why the Area Matters More Than the Clump
The visible clump may be two metres across. If rhizome has run eight metres along a fence line and into a border, the job is the eight metres. Two gardens with identical clumps can be completely different quotations on that basis, which is why we walk it rather than price from a photograph of the canes.
Depth matters much less than width. The job is defined by area.
Why Fragments Decide Everything
A piece of rhizome carrying a live bud will grow into a new plant. That is what makes bamboo different from most things people want removed — material left behind, or scattered by a machine, does not merely survive, it re-establishes. It is why the sifting matters as much as the digging and why nothing goes on a compost heap.
What Our Bamboo Root Removal Service Covers
- Running and clumping bamboo identified before anything is quoted
- The spread walked out to its actual edge
- Full rhizome excavation across the affected area
- Runners chased out beyond the main dig
- Machine excavation where access allows, hand digging where it does not
- Rhizome barriers along boundaries where the source continues next door
- All material off site under a registered waste carrier
- Ground backfilled, firmed and left ready for turf or planting
Where It Cannot All Come Out
Under a patio that is staying, beneath a garage slab, across a boundary into a neighbour's garden. We will say so plainly. The honest plan there is to remove everything reachable, install a vertical barrier on the line, and expect a small amount of regrowth for a season or two while what is left exhausts itself.
The Follow-Up Season
Even a thorough excavation can produce a few thin shoots from fragments in the first growing season. They look alarming and they are not — a fragment has no established network behind it, so pulling each shoot as it appears exhausts it. A removal that has not yet been through a spring is one that has not been proved.

Bamboo Root Removal — Common Questions
Is cutting the canes down not enough?
No. That removes one season's growth from a plant that lives underground, and repeated cutting tends to make the spread worse.
How deep do you dig?
Usually 30 to 50cm, which covers the great majority of rhizome. The width of the dig matters far more than the depth.
Will it come back?
Possibly a few weak shoots from fragments in the first season. Pull them as they appear and they exhaust themselves.
What if the bamboo is next door's?
Then removal on your side alone will need repeating. A barrier on the boundary is the answer, ideally alongside a conversation with the neighbour.
Can I put the spoil on my compost heap?
No. Rhizome regrows from fragments and will establish wherever the spoil goes. All of it leaves site.
