“As deep as possible” is the usual request and it is rarely the right specification. Depth costs time and money, and beyond what the next use requires it buys nothing.
The Standard Depth
A typical grind takes the stump to somewhere between 15 and 30 centimetres below the surrounding ground level. That is enough to put the top of the remaining stump well below anything you would normally dig, mow over or walk on.
Larger machines will go to 40 centimetres and beyond where there is access for them and a reason to.

What Depth You Actually Need
- Lawn or turf — 20 to 25 centimetres is comfortable. Grass roots occupy the top few centimetres; what matters is having enough clean topsoil above the grindings rather than the absolute depth
- Ornamental planting — 30 centimetres or so, and be realistic that a shrub cannot go exactly where the stump was for a while
- Planting a replacement tree — the deepest requirement, and honestly the hardest. Even a deep grind leaves the major roots in place and a mass of decaying wood. Planting a new tree a metre or two to one side is much more likely to succeed
- Paving, a patio or a shed base — deep, and then the grindings must come out entirely and be replaced with compacted material. Anything built over decaying wood will settle
- A fence post line — deep enough and wide enough to get a post in, which often means grinding wider than the stump rather than just deeper
Building anything on top is the case where depth genuinely matters. Grindings and remaining roots decay and lose volume over several years. A patio, a base or a wall laid over them will settle unevenly. For structural work the ground needs excavating out properly and backfilling with compacted material, which is a dig rather than a grind.
What Limits the Depth
- The machine. A narrow-access grinder through a side gate has a smaller wheel and less reach than a tracked machine on a driveway
- Stones and rubble. Old foundations, hardcore or flint in the soil stop a grind well short. Some Hertfordshire ground is very flinty
- Services. If there is a cable or a pipe at 40 centimetres, that is the depth limit regardless of what anybody would like
- The root flare. Big surface roots radiating from the stump have to be ground separately and they spread the work outwards as well as downwards
Width Is Often the Thing People Forget
A stump that is 40 centimetres across at the cut has a root flare that may be a metre wide at ground level. Grinding only the visible stump leaves a ring of solid root just under the surface, which is exactly what a spade or a mower finds later.
So a proper grind is wider than the stump looks, and when you are comparing quotations it is worth checking that both include the flare rather than just the column.
