Crown reduction is the single most useful piece of tree work there is, and it is what most people actually want when they ring up about removing a tree.
It makes the tree smaller in every direction while leaving it recognisably the same tree, which means the shade comes off the garden, the crown comes back off the roof, the wind loading drops and the tree is still there.

When It Is the Right Job
- A crown that has grown over a roof, a conservatory or a boundary
- More shade than the garden can carry
- A tree in an exposed position where wind loading is a concern
- A long lateral limb carrying too much end weight
- A tree whose scale has become uncomfortable next to the house
- A tree you would rather keep than lose
How Much Comes Off
Up to about a quarter to a third of the crown in one go on a healthy tree. Beyond that, the tree's response becomes a stress response rather than ordinary growth, and finding suitable growth points to cut back to gets difficult — which is the point where a reduction quietly turns into a topping.
Older and larger trees tolerate less. A very mature specimen does far better with a light reduction repeated over several years than a heavy one in a single visit, and we would rather say so than take the money.
Reduction, Not Topping
We do not top trees. Cutting stems off at a convenient height leaves stubs the tree cannot seal, and the mass of fast regrowth that follows is attached to the outside of old wood rather than growing from the structure. A topped tree is more likely to fail than it was before, and it costs more over time because the regrowth has to be dealt with repeatedly.
A proper reduction cuts each shortened branch back to a side branch big enough to take over — the convention is around a third of the diameter of the wood being removed — so there is something there to draw the sap and seal the wound.
What Our Crown Reduction Service Covers
- Reduction to a stated amount, agreed before the work
- All cuts to suitable growth points, never to stubs
- Even reduction across the crown so the tree keeps its shape
- Staged reduction over several years on older specimens
- Reduction of individual limbs where only one is a problem
- Combined with thinning or lifting where that is what you actually need
- All arisings chipped and removed
What It Costs, and What Changes It
Reduction is usually cheaper than removing the same tree, because there is less material and no stump. Access is the main variable, as with all tree work: a reduction where sections can be dropped is considerably quicker than one where every piece is roped down over a greenhouse.
Worth thinking about over a longer period, though. A tree being kept permanently smaller than it wants to be is a commitment repeated every few years, and on some species and some sites the honest arithmetic favours removing and replanting with something of an appropriate size.
Protected Trees
Reduction is very often approved where removal is refused, which makes it the practical route on a tree with an order on it or in a conservation area. The application still has to be made and the notice period still applies, so it is worth starting early.

Crown Reduction — Common Questions
Will crown reduction spoil the shape of my tree?
No, done properly. The tree ends up smaller with the same outline. What spoils the shape is topping, which is a different thing.
How much smaller will the tree be?
Usually a couple of metres in each direction. We agree the amount before the work rather than describing it as a general intention.
How long before it needs doing again?
Several years on most species, depending on vigour and how much came off. It is not annual work.
Can a protected tree be reduced?
Often yes, even where removal would be refused — but the consent or notification has to be dealt with first.
Is reduction cheaper than removal?
Usually, for the same tree, and there is no stump to deal with afterwards.
