Bankside willow, alder and crack willow are the trees we are asked about most in Hertford. They shed limbs readily and lean towards the light over the water, which looks alarming and is often perfectly normal. Where one genuinely needs work, pollarding or reduction is usually better than removal, because the roots are doing a job in the bank.
This page is about tree surgery here specifically — the ground, the plots and the access that shape how the work is done, in a town where four rivers meet here, and riverside trees and banks bring consents of their own.

The Ground Under Hertford Trees
Tree work starts below the tree, and here that means river gravel and alluvium where the Lea, Beane, Rib and Mimram meet, wet in places and free-draining in others within the same garden. Ground of that kind decides how firmly a tree is anchored and how it behaves in a gale, which is why soil lifting at the base of a tree on river gravel and alluvium where the Lea, Beane, Rib and Mimram meet, wet in places and free-draining in others within the same garden is the one sign worth reporting straight away rather than watching for a season.
The Trees on Hertford Plots
What we are usually asked to look at here is riverside properties with mature waterside trees, and a conservation area covering much of the old town. Trees end up the size their setting allowed, so on riverside properties with mature waterside trees, and a conservation area covering much of the old town the useful question is almost always whether a reduction solves the complaint before removal is even discussed.
Getting the Work Done in Hertford
Access here is narrow historic streets, restricted parking, and gardens that run down to water rather than to a road, and on a tree job that decides the method rather than just the price. Where there is nowhere safe to drop a section, every piece is roped and lowered under control instead. The thing worth telling us first is that four rivers meet here, and riverside trees and banks bring consents of their own.
Reduction or Removal on a Hertford Plot
Most people ring having already decided the tree has to come out. Among riverside properties with mature waterside trees, and a conservation area covering much of the old town that is usually not the answer, because what is actually causing the complaint is size or shade and both come back under control with a reduction. Where river gravel and alluvium where the Lea, Beane, Rib and Mimram meet, wet in places and free-draining in others within the same garden, removing a large tree close to a building is a decision worth taking slowly rather than quickly.

Tree Surgery Advice
Tree Surgery in Hertford — Common Questions
Do Tree Masters cover Hertford?
Yes — tree surgery in Hertford and in the surrounding villages, including Bengeo, Hertingfordbury, Bayford, Brickendon and Waterford.
What affects the price of tree surgery in Hertford?
Access, more than anything else. Here it is narrow historic streets, restricted parking, and gardens that run down to water rather than to a road, and on a tree surgery job that decides how much of the work is hand labour rather than machine time.
Can you do other work at the same visit?
Yes, and among riverside properties with mature waterside trees, and a conservation area covering much of the old town it usually makes sense to. Most of the cost of any visit is getting a team and a vehicle to an address where access is narrow historic streets, restricted parking, and gardens that run down to water rather than to a road, so booking tree surgery alongside other work costs considerably less than two separate trips.
What should I send with an enquiry?
For tree surgery, photographs plus the width of the narrowest point on the way in — and because four rivers meet here, and riverside trees and banks bring consents of their own, those two answers are what turn a provisional figure into an accurate one.
Do you work for landlords and agents in Hertford?
Yes. tree surgery for landlords, letting agents and managing agents is a good part of what we do across Hertford and Bengeo, Hertingfordbury, Bayford, Brickendon and Waterford, and we can invoice the agent direct.
