Hedge Trimming in Hertfordshire

The routine annual cut. Cheap, quick, and the thing that stops a hedge ever becoming a rescue job.

Home › Hedge Maintenance › Hedge Trimming

Trimming is maintenance rather than surgery: this year's growth cut back to roughly last year's line, the shape kept square and level, and the clippings taken away.

It is the cheapest hedge work there is, and it is the reason some hedges stay the same size for thirty years while others become a problem that costs several times as much to put right.

What Our Hedge Trimming Service Covers

  • Annual and twice-yearly maintenance cutting
  • Tops, faces and ends, cut square and level to a line
  • Front hedges onto pavements, with cuttings kept off the footway
  • Long boundary and field hedges, quoted by length
  • Low formal hedging — box, lavender, dwarf hedging
  • Cutting to a consistent line each year, not to wherever the growth ends
  • All clippings collected and removed, including out of borders
  • Regular scheduled visits where you want the cycle kept for you

How Often Yours Needs Doing

Once a year suits most garden hedges, cut in late summer when the main flush of growth is over. Fast formal species — privet in particular, and box where you want it crisp — are better with two. Beech and hornbeam want a single late-summer cut, which is what makes them hold their dead leaves through the winter.

Conifer hedges want one cut a year that never gets missed, for a specific reason covered below.

The Shape Matters as Much as the Frequency

A hedge cut very slightly wider at the base than the top stays dense all the way down. That gentle taper lets light reach the lower foliage. Hedges cut with vertical or top-heavy sides shade out their own base and go thin and leggy at the bottom over the years, which is hard to reverse and is the commonest reason people give up on a hedge.

For the same reason we cut back to a consistent line each year rather than to wherever this year's growth happens to end. That one habit is the difference between a hedge that holds its size and one that gains a few centimetres every season until it has taken a metre of garden.

The Conifer Point

Leylandii and most other conifers will not regrow from brown wood. Each year an annual cut is missed, the green shell moves further out, and the point it can be cut back to moves out with it. A conifer hedge trimmed every year can be held at a size indefinitely; one left for five years often cannot be brought back at all. Yew is the exception and will regenerate.

Timing and Nesting

Hedges are the most heavily used nesting habitat in most gardens, and active nests are protected from roughly March to August. Light maintenance trimming within that window is possible with the hedge checked properly first; hard cutting waits. Late summer, after nesting and after the main growth, is the straightforward slot.

What It Costs

Length and height, and height matters more — the jump from a hedge that can be cut from the ground to one needing proper access equipment is the biggest single step in the price. After that it is how long since the last cut, because a year's soft growth and four years of woody growth are entirely different jobs on the same hedge.

Hedge Trimming — Common Questions

How often should my hedge be trimmed?

Once a year for most, twice for privet and formal box. Conifer hedges want one cut a year that is never skipped.

When is the best time?

Late summer for a single annual cut — after nesting, and the shape then holds through winter.

Do you take the clippings away?

Yes, included, and collected out of borders as well as off the lawn. We can leave them if you have somewhere for them.

Can you cut a hedge I can't reach?

Yes. Above ground-and-ladder height we use proper access equipment, which is priced differently but perfectly routine.

Can you come back every year without me arranging it?

Yes. We keep a number of hedges on an annual cycle and get in touch when it is due.
