Hedge Removal in Hertfordshire

Taking a hedge out entirely, roots included, and leaving a line that is ready for a fence, a new hedge or a border.

Sometimes a hedge has reached the point where reduction is money spent delaying a decision. A conifer hedge that needs to come down past the green, a hedge more than half dead, or one so wide the garden it was meant to edge has largely gone — those are removals, and we would rather say so at the quotation.

When Removal Is Genuinely the Right Answer

  • A conifer hedge that has to come below the green and will not recover
  • A hedge more than half dead, where gapping up would be patching
  • A hedge so wide the usable garden has gone
  • A species entirely wrong for the position
  • A boundary being replaced with fencing
  • A hedge in the way of a build, a drive or an extension
  • Trees grown up inside a hedge that have made it a tree line

What Removal Actually Involves

  1. Cut the hedge down to low stumps and clear the top growth. The bulk of the volume, and the easy part
  2. Take out the stumps and root systems. Dug or winched out, or ground where the line allows a machine along it. This is the part that separates a removal from a very hard cut
  3. Clear the root plate and the debris that has built up along the hedge line, frequently over decades
  4. Make good the line — backfill, level and firm, ready for whatever is going in

Leaving the stumps in is cheaper and it is a false economy on most species, because privet, laurel, hawthorn and holly all regrow vigorously from a cut stump. A hedge removed to ground level comes back as a row of shoots the following spring.

Before You Take a Hedge Out

Three things worth checking first. Whether the hedge is actually yours, which is not always obvious and is worth establishing from the title plan rather than assumed. Whether there is a planning condition requiring it to be retained, which is common on newer estates. And whether there are mature trees within it, which can be protected even where the hedge is not — particularly in a conservation area.

Nesting season applies as it does to any hedge work. Removal between March and August needs the hedge checked properly first, and on a long established hedge the sensible answer is usually to wait until autumn.

What Goes In Afterwards

Most hedge removals are followed by fencing, which is straightforward once the root systems are out — posts need firm undisturbed ground, so the line matters. Some are followed by a new hedge of a species that suits the position, planted narrow and kept that way from the start.

It is worth deciding which before the removal, because it affects how the line is finished and whether topsoil needs bringing in.

Hedge Removal — Common Questions

Do you take the roots out as well?

Yes, as standard. Leaving stumps in is cheaper and most hedging species regrow vigorously from them, so it rarely saves anything.

Can you remove a hedge and put a fence in?

We remove the hedge and leave the line ready for fencing, backfilled and levelled, with the ground firm enough to take posts.

Is it cheaper to reduce it instead?

Usually, yes — and on a conifer hedge that needs to come below the green, reduction will not give you what you want at any price.

Can I remove a boundary hedge?

If it is yours. Establish that from the title plan first, and check for any planning condition requiring it to be kept.

What about trees growing in the hedge?

Quoted as tree work, and they may be protected even where the hedge is not. Worth checking with the council before booking.
