When Does a Hedge Need More Than a Simple Trim?

When the shape can no longer be corrected by cutting to last year's line — because it is bare at the base, hollow in the middle, or has trees growing in it.

A routine trim cuts this year's growth back to roughly last year's line. It works indefinitely on a hedge that is in good shape. It does nothing at all for a hedge whose shape has gone, and paying for annual trims on one is money that is not solving the problem.

Here is how to tell the difference.

Signs a Trim Is Not the Job

Bare and leggy at the bottom

The classic symptom of years of being cut with vertical or top-heavy sides. The top has shaded out the base, and no amount of trimming the top brings the bottom back. It needs the sides reduced and a proper tapered profile establishing, which is a renovation rather than a cut.

Hollow in the middle

Look into the hedge rather than at it. Many old hedges are a thin green shell around a hollow interior of bare stems. That is fine structurally, but it means there is very little margin — cut even slightly too far and you are into brown wood.

Gaps you can see through

Usually a dead or dying section rather than a management problem. Worth establishing why before doing anything: waterlogging, honey fungus and box blight all produce gaps and all want different responses.

Trees growing in it

Extremely common and very often missed. Ash, sycamore, elder and holly self-seed into hedge lines constantly and grow up through them unnoticed. Once one is above the hedge it is a tree, not a hedge plant, and it will not be controlled by trimming. It needs dealing with as tree work — and if the hedge is in a conservation area, that tree may be protected even though the hedge is not.

Wider than the path it was meant to leave

A width problem, and the remedy is a staged side reduction over two seasons rather than another cut at the current line.

What the Options Actually Are

  1. Trim. Annual, cheap, correct for a hedge in good shape
  2. Reduction. Bringing height or width back to a chosen line. A bigger job, done in the right season, on a species that will take it
  3. Renovation. A staged programme over two or three years to rebuild the shape of an old hedge — one side, then the other, then the top
  4. Gapping up. Planting into gaps where the rest of the hedge is sound. Works well on native and beech hedges, less well on conifers
  5. Replacement. Sometimes the right answer, and not the failure it feels like

When Replacement Is Genuinely the Better Option

We would rather say this at the quotation than take the money for work that will not achieve what you want:

  • A conifer hedge that needs to come down past the green. It will not recover and nothing changes that
  • A hedge more than half dead, where gapping up would be patching
  • A hedge so wide that the garden it was meant to edge has largely gone
  • A species entirely wrong for the position — a forest conifer planted as a screen in a small garden was always going to end here

Replacement is slower than people fear but not as slow as they think. A hedge planted at a sensible spacing gives useful screening within a few years, and it will then be maintainable at the size you actually want — which the one being replaced, by definition, was not.

Send a photograph of the whole hedge including the bottom. That is usually enough to tell whether it wants a trim, a renovation, or an honest conversation about replacement.
