- HedgeTall boundary hedge above a brick wall
- AccessLadder from the pavement

This job was a tall boundary hedge running along a residential road in Hertford, growing from the top of a brick wall. Hedges like this get away from people quickly: a few years without a proper cut and the top is well out of reach from the ground, while the sides lean further out over the pavement every season.
We cut the hedge back from the pavement side using a ladder to reach the top, taking it back to a firm line so that pedestrians, pushchairs and wheelchairs have the full width of the path. A hedge that overhangs a public pavement is more than a tidiness matter, because it forces people towards the road.
What the job involved
- Cutting back growth that had spread out over the pavement
- Reducing the height so the top of the hedge can be kept up with in future
- Working from a ladder to reach the upper part of the hedge safely
- Clearing the pavement and the cuttings once the cut was done
Keeping a boundary hedge under control
With a tall boundary hedge the aim is to stop it getting bigger. Cut it back to a sensible size once, then keep to a regular cycle, and each visit is a light trim rather than a rescue job. Leave it for too long and every cut gets heavier, slower and more expensive.
Our guides on keeping boundary hedges under control and whether a very tall hedge can be reduced go into it in more detail.
