This was a tall tree in a back garden in Stevenage, growing up beside a fence with other planting, pots and a gravel area around the base. Working in a garden that is laid out and lived in is a different job from working in an open space, because everything below the tree has to be left as it was found.
The tree was pruned back to bring its height down and take the weight out of the crown, leaving a shorter, more balanced tree that sits comfortably in the garden. A tree that has outgrown its position casts more shade, drops more onto the ground and gets harder to keep in check each year.
What the job involved
- Pruning the crown back to reduce the height of the tree
- Taking out the heavy growth that was adding weight to the top
- Working around the planting, pots and gravel without damaging them
- Clearing all of the cut material from the garden
Pruning in a smaller garden
Many gardens in Stevenage are modest in size, and a tall tree in one has a big effect on the light and the space. Pruning is the usual answer: it lets you keep the tree and the shade it gives while taking back the height that is causing the trouble.
If you are wondering whether tree work is practical in your garden, our guide on tree surgery in a small garden answers it, and tree removal or tree reduction helps with deciding between the two.
