Small gardens, terraced back gardens, gardens with no side access and gardens surrounded on all sides by neighbours are normal working conditions rather than an obstacle. The method changes; the outcome does not.
What Changes
In an open garden, most of a tree can be cut and dropped. Nothing gets dropped in a small enclosed garden, because there is nowhere for it to land that is not a fence, a greenhouse, a patio or a neighbour.
So everything is rigged: tied off before the cut, lowered under control on a rope, untied, moved clear, repeat. On a tree of any size that is a great many separate operations, and it is why the same tree can take twice as long here as it would on a driveway.

Access Is the Question That Decides Everything
Not the size of the garden and not the size of the tree. The narrowest point between the tree and where a vehicle can stand.
- A standard side gate is usually enough for people, hand tools and barrowed material. Most work is possible
- Through the house is done, with boards and sheeting down. It is slower and it is priced accordingly
- A shared alley or rear passage is common in terraces and works fine, though the carry distance adds up
- No access other than through a neighbour's property needs their agreement, which is worth securing before booking rather than on the day
The single most useful thing you can send with an enquiry: the width of the narrowest gap on the route out, measured. It determines whether a chipper can get in, whether a stump grinder can reach, and how much of the job is carrying.
Protecting What Is Around It
In a small garden almost everything is within reach of the work, so protection is part of the job rather than an afterthought: sheeting over a pond, boards over a lawn that would otherwise be churned, greenhouses and glass covered or, where sensible, cleared.
Where a tree overhangs a neighbour, we will want to work over their side at some point — even just to lower a limb safely. That is much better arranged in advance. A note through the door a week before is usually all it takes and it avoids an awkward conversation with a saw running.
The Stump Question, Specifically
This is where small gardens most often hit a genuine limit. A stump grinder is a wheeled machine and it has to physically reach the stump. Narrow-access machines exist and will go through a standard gate, but a gate narrower than that, or steps with no ramp, can mean grinding is not possible at all.
Where it is not, the alternatives are cutting the stump flush and leaving it to decay, or digging it out by hand, which is heavy work and usually more expensive than grinding would have been. Worth establishing before the tree comes down, not after.
Waste, Which Is Most of the Labour
In an enclosed garden the chipper stays on the street, so every branch is carried to it. That carry is, on a lot of small-garden jobs, the largest single component of the time.
It is also the reason cordwood is worth a conversation. If you have a wood burner and want the logs, that portion does not need carrying out at all — a real saving in a garden where everything is hand-balled to the road.
The Neighbours
Tree work in a terrace is loud and it is visible from several gardens at once. Telling the immediate neighbours what day it is happening costs nothing and heads off most of the friction. Where parking is tight, it also makes it much more likely there is somewhere for the vehicle to go.
