This is the most common pair of jobs we are asked for, and it works well, with one thing to be explicit about on the quotation.
Cleared Is Not Turf-Ready
A clearance can stop at three different points, and only the last of them is ready for a lawn:
- Cut down and tidied — growth off, roots still in the ground
- Cleared to soil — surface clear, ground visible
- Cleared and cultivated — weed roots out, ground turned, levelled, firmed
Turf needs the third. If the quotation says the first and the expectation is the third, that gap appears on the day the turf arrives, which is the worst possible moment for it.

Why the Combination Is Efficient
- One mobilisation rather than two
- The cultivation that turf needs overlaps with the final stage of a thorough clearance
- Waste from both goes in the same loads
- Levels get established once, during the clearance, rather than corrected afterwards
- Topsoil can come in on the same delivery as the turf
The Weed Root Problem, Specifically
This is where clearance-into-turf goes wrong. An overgrown garden is full of perennial weed roots — bramble, bindweed, couch, ground elder, nettle, dock. Cutting the tops off removes nothing, and rotovating chops each root into several new plants. They come up through new turf within weeks, and once the lawn is down there is no way to remove them without lifting it.
So the roots come out by hand during cultivation. It is slow, it is the least glamorous part of the job, and it is the difference between a lawn and a weed bed with grass in it.
What a Clearance Reveals That Affects the Lawn
Ten years of growth hides a lot, and some of it changes the plan:
- Shade. Once the scrub is gone the tree canopy above it is obvious. An area shaded most of the day will not hold a lawn, whatever is done to the soil
- Drainage. Ground that sits wet only becomes apparent when it is bare
- Almost no topsoil, which is common, and means importing some
- Buried hard surfaces — an old path or patio a few centimetres down
- Stumps nobody knew were there
- Bamboo or knotweed, which must be dealt with fully before any turf goes down
We would rather raise any of these at the point they appear than lay turf over them.
Timing the Two
Turf is perishable and must be laid within a day or so of being cut, so it is ordered for the day the ground will genuinely be ready. On a clearance where the extent of the work is uncertain, a short gap between the two stages is more sensible than pallets of turf waiting on a drive.
A gap also lets the prepared ground settle and any weed flush be hoed off, both of which improve the result.
