This was a group of conifers growing along the fence at the bottom of a back garden in Potters Bar. Several of them had died back, with the foliage gone a dull rust brown, and they were standing in front of a close-boarded fence beside the borders and a lawn that the family used.
The dead trees were taken down and removed. A dead tree does not get better, and dead wood gets brittle with time, so branches can drop without warning. Taking them out in a planned job, with the garden protected around them, is much safer than waiting for them to come down by themselves.
What the job involved
- Taking down the dead and browning conifers along the back fence
- Cutting the trees up in sections and bringing the branches down onto the lawn
- Working beside the fence and the planting without damaging them
- Clearing away all of the cut material and raking the lawn and borders clear
Dead trees in a Potters Bar garden
Back gardens in Potters Bar are often fairly enclosed, with fences close by and houses on every side, so a dead tree can lean over a boundary or a neighbour’s garden as well as your own. That makes it worth dealing with early. Once the trees are down, the stumps can either be left to rot or ground out so the space can be used again.
If you are not sure whether a tree is dying or has become unsafe, our guide on how to tell when a tree has become unsafe explains the signs, and what happens during a tree removal walks through the job.
