This job was a long hedge growing right along the walls of a house in Cheshunt, turning a corner around a lawn. A hedge in this position is part of the look of the house and sits close to the windows, so how it is cut matters: too wild and it crowds the glass, too uneven and it shows against the white walls behind it.

We cut the hedge back along its full length and round the corner, bringing the top and sides in to a tidier, tighter line and taking the bulk out of the growth. Because the hedge sits so close to the house, the work is done carefully and the lawn and the dry stone wall beside it are kept clear of cuttings.

What the job involved

  • Cutting back the sides and top of the hedge along the full run of the house
  • Following the corner so the line stayed continuous from one wall to the next
  • Taking the growth back from the windows and the base of the walls
  • Clearing the cuttings from the lawn and borders when finished

Hedges beside the house in Cheshunt

A hedge planted close to a house is a different job from a boundary hedge down the garden. It has to be cut in tight to keep light coming through the windows and to stop leaves and twigs collecting against the walls, but it also needs enough leaf left on it to stay healthy. A steady, regular cut keeps that balance and avoids a bigger cut-back later on.

If you are unsure how often yours should be cut, our guide on how often garden hedges should be cut explains it, and the one on what happens to hedge waste after cutting covers the clear-up.
