This job was a tall, dense evergreen hedge on the corner of a garden in Tring, running beside the road. A hedge this size acts as a screen between the garden and the street, so the aim is a clean, even line: flat along the top, straight up the sides and smoothly rounded at the corners.

We cut and trimmed the whole hedge, working along the face and across the top so the line stays level from one end to the other. The photographs show the result, a firm, tidy shape standing clear of the lawn, with the planting and the cherry tree beside it left looking neat.

What the job involved

  • Cutting back the face and the top of the hedge along its full length
  • Keeping the top level and the sides straight so the hedge reads as one clean block
  • Trimming the corners to a smooth, rounded edge
  • Leaving the lawn and borders tidy when the work was finished

Cutting a tall evergreen hedge

Dense evergreen hedges like this one are best cut little and often. Most of them will not shoot again from old, bare wood, so each cut needs to stay within the green growth, and a regular trim keeps the hedge thick and the line crisp. A hedge that has been left for years needs a harder cut, so the sooner it is done the easier it is.

Height matters too. Where a hedge is taller than head height, the top has to be reached from a ladder or a platform rather than from the ground, so it is worth having it done by someone who is set up for it. Our guide on how often garden hedges should be cut explains how often to book, and if yours has grown very tall, see whether a very tall hedge can be reduced.
