This job was a garden clearance at a brick house in Ware, where brambles and ivy had taken over the ground beside the house and were climbing up the wall. The side of the house had a narrow passage along a close-boarded fence, and a good part of it was lost under growth.

We cut the brambles and ivy back and cleared the ground, working with a strimmer through the thickest growth. The photographs show the result: open beds at the front and side of the house, and the side passage cleared down to the path so that the gate at the end can be reached again.

What the job involved

  • Cutting back brambles and ivy spreading across the ground beside the house
  • Taking the climbing growth back off the brick wall
  • Clearing the narrow side passage along the fence
  • Leaving the front and side beds open and the path to the side gate clear

Clearing brambles and ivy

Brambles and ivy look like a surface problem, but both are rooted and both come back quickly if the cut growth is left or only the top is removed. The aim on a job like this is to cut the growth back, clear it away and open the ground up, so that you can see what you have and decide what goes there next.

Climbing growth on a wall needs care, because ivy can grip the brickwork and pointing as it climbs. Our guide on whether ivy can be removed as part of a garden clearance explains how that is handled, and what is included in a garden clearance sets out what a normal job covers.
